Want to experience Bolivia’s unmissable highlight in a day during the rainy season? From the town of Uyuni to the wilderness of the Salt Flats – it’s an adventure you won’t want to end. Start off by visiting the Train Cemetery, then get ready to hit Colchani, the gateway to the salt flats. Then, enter the salt flats and spend the day slowly driving through the ‘Mirrof of the Sky’ (rainy season) and taking surreal, reflection photographs with your travel companions and your guide. End the tour back in Uyuni at the end of the day.
Is this trip for you?
This tour starts and ends in the town of Uyuni
You can catch a flight the same morning of the tour or an overnight bus the previous night
This tour will accommodate up to six people (usually less) in a 4WD vehicle
Incahuasi Island is not visited during the rainy season and distance covered is dependent on the level of water
Welcome to Bolivia's most stunning natural attraction, with a magical combination of mountain peaks, Andean scenery and crystal-clear waters over the salt flats.
First stop is the legendary Cementerio de Trenes (Train Cemetery), a fascinating site reminiscent of Bolivia’s booming mining industry in the 1900’s. Later, take a stroll around beautiful Colchani market, nestled in the southeastern rim of the salt flats (Salar). Enter the Salar and visit the former salt hotel Playa Blanca with its colorful multinational flag stand (sometimes it may not be possible to reach this point if the water level is too high).
After lunch, continue your drive on the vast “Mirror of the Sky” with great photographic opportunities thanks to the perfect reflection (weather-permitting) caused by the flooded surface of the salt flats.
On the way back to Colchani enjoy more great photographs and general fun before arriving in the town of Uyuni between 18:00-19:00 in time for your flight or bus out (alternatively stay overnight in Uyuni on your own) marking the end of our full day Uyuni adventure.
It starts and ends in the town of Uyuni
No, it is NOT included
You can take a short flight from La Paz (45 mins approx, leaving early morning) or a longer overnight bus from La Paz (10 hrs approx. leaving between 8 - 10 PM).
It can be done year-round but the months of April-November are dry so it is possible to visit Incahuasi Island while in the rainy season of December-March it is not.
No, but a moderate level of fitness is recommended in order to enjoy the hike to Incahuasi Island. You can always choose to spend time at the base of it (without hiking) but it is recommended to join the hike for obvious reasons.
Uyuni Salt Flats is located at 3650m above sea level. Most people do not need medication and feel little more than some mildly unpleasant effects. However, talk to your doctor if you haven’t been to high altitude before, more so if you have a medical condition/heart problems.
