Speed is the watchword for this high-adrenaline active tour down the World’s Most Dangerous Road. In a mere few hours, you’ll bike from up in the Andes at 4700m down to subtropical forest at 1100m. across canyons, cliffs, waterfalls, rivers and much, much more. Best of all, you’ll always travel with an experienced guide who knows the safest and most scenic route. Remember, you’re here for a great time, not a competition; but beating this experience is going to be really hard!
Is this trip for you?
This tour includes a full suspension, professional competition mountain bike
All safety gear (helmet, gloves, knee and elbow guards) is included
Group tour with English-speaking guide
You need to be confident on a bike (not professional level, but confident level)
Pick up is from your hotel in central La Paz (if not central enough, a convenient meeting point will be provided).
Transfer by private vehicle to the start point of the ride at ‘La Cumbre’ (the summit, 4700m). Enjoy spectacular scenery of the Andes Range while getting your safety gear and mountain bike prepared for the ride. The first leg will be on smooth tarmac while riding downhill amidst Andean scenery.
Witness a rapid change of scenery and temperature after a couple of hours. After a short break mid morning, climb aboard our support vehicle to drive past a 30-min. uphill section after which we will find ourselves at the start of the actual “Death Road”.
The next section will require to focus on the dirt track of which some sections are relatively smooth while others are rocky and uneven. Your guide will provide plenty of safety directions and we will keep a reasonable speed to stay safe at all times (we ride at our own pace always). There will be plenty of breaks at the most scenic spots along the road so you can focus on riding safely and enjoying the stops allowing the whole group to catch up.
As we continue our ride downhill, the scenery is impressive and the temperature starts to soar. Waterfalls, streams, canyons and subtropical mountains are all included in the menu. After a whole 4-5 hours of riding we reach the end of our road at the village of Yolosa. After a short victory refreshment, follow us for lunch and some ‘me time’. Our drive back to La Paz (4hrs. approx) starts now as we take the newer/safer, paved road across the other side of the valley. Arrive in downtown La Paz between 18:00 - 20:00.
No, most people have never done downhill mountain biking when taking this tour. However, a good level of confidence on a bike is a must (e.g. if you have ridden bikes outdoors in your life and are confident on one).
Everyone is allowed to ride at their own pace. There are several rest stops to allow the slower ones catch up with the faster ones. There is always at least one guide in the front and one in the very back (besides the support vehicle).
Yes, although that is not his mother tongue, he is capable of communicating and provide instructions in English.
This trip and its price are for a full-suspension (front and rear) KONA downhill mountain bike with hydraulic brakes (safest)
Arrival time varies as it depends on weather conditions, speed of group, etc. It usually is between 6 and 7 PM although it can be later. 8 out of 10 times people can catch their overnight bus without a problem but we do not recommend it as we are not responsible if there are slow people in the group on that day or the weather is adverse (fog) on the drive back.
About 90% of the ride is downhill (10% flat to mildly up) so as long as one is moderately fit, it will be fine
The start point of the tour is at 4700 although we do not spend more than 45 mins at this point. However, if you are prone to altitude sickness and your doctor recommends it, it is fine to take some altitude medication
